JCC Cinema 37: WA-SHOKU ~Beyond Sushi~ was held on 26 September 2015 at Japan Creative Centre (JCC), an encore screening from the Japanese Film Festival Singapore 2015 that ran from 9 July to 8 August at the National Museum of Singapore. Despite the hazy weather, a total of 30 guests, both young and old, turned up at the cinema.

Directed by award-winning director Junichi Suzuki, this feature documentary shows the past and future of Japanese food, not just Sushi, through the passionate story behind a group of men and women who dedicated their lives in preserving and promoting it in America to rest of the world.

These men and women include key figures in the industry, from business leaders to exclusive chefs, as well as both Japanese and foreigners, such as Chairman of Mutual Trading Co., Inc. Mr Noritoshi Kanai and French chef Mr Joel Robuchon. They explained and showed the difficulties, challenges and plans for the future in spreading Japanese food, an Asian cuisine to the West.

The documentary provided an impressive and unique viewpoint of Japanese food, as well as a full picture of the ‘backstage’ behind all the meticulous and delicious cuisines, and not just tasting itself. The documentary had received positive feedbacks from many of the audiences, where a few had even expressed their willingness to purchase it.
